Bertha Centre for Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Dr François Bonnici is the founding Director of the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, the leading university and business school in Africa. It was established in partnership with the Bertha Foundation as the first academic centre in Africa dedicated to social innovations through both systemic approaches and rooted, on-the-ground work. Key initiatives focus on Education Innovation; Health Innovation; Innovative Financing; Ecosystems, Policy & Scaling in Social Innovation.

He trained as a medical doctor, read MPH (London) & MBA (Oxford) as a Rhodes Scholar. For a decade he worked in paediatric medicine and humanitarian & development programmes. As a WEF Global Leadership Fellow, he worked on PPPs in health and development, and headed the Schwab Foundation’s work in Africa & Middle East. He co-founded the African Social Entrepreneurs Network (now over 3,000 members). In 2013, he was elected an Archbishop Tutu African Leadership Fellow.
