As Additional Secretary in the Department of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India, Dr Kumar is responsible for coordinating the Digital India programme. This includes coordinating with concerned Ministries/State Governments/agencies in public and private sector for development of policies/frameworks and implementation of projects for three key pillars of Digital India: namely, Digital infrastructure, provision of Digital Services; and Digital empowerment of society. He is also looking after all matters relating to Internet Governance and skill development in areas of Electronics and ICTs.

Dr Ajay Kumar served as a Joint Secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India from 2010 to 2015. Between 2007 – 2010 he served as a Principal Secretary to the Government of Kerala, Information Technology Department, Kerala, where he achieved a growth in IT investments in the State to three times national average during the period; upscaling e-governance initiatives within Government; and several niche projects including mobile computing, cloud computing and open source computing. He also served as the Managing Director of the Kerala State Agricultural and Rural Development Bank.
