SEED Congratulates Seven Malawi Enterprises on their Latest Success
Seven of our SEED Malawi eco-inclusive enterprises - Chonona, Green Impact Technologies, Green Ventures, Honey Products, Hortinet, Inte Waste and Ziweto – were recently able to raise funds that will help them scale-up and achieve their full growth potential.
Supporting female smallholder farmers and young entrepreneurs in sustainable agriculture; reducing carbon emissions by producing briquettes through waste recycling as a sustainable, clean source of energy; or providing solar energy to rural communities using a pay-as-you-go financing model, are just some of the solutions provided by these enterprises in Malawi.
Read more about the seven enterprises, which successfully raised funds after our support below.
SECTOR: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Builds a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural value chain by supporting local, mainly female smallholder farmers and young entrepreneurs in Malawi. It also reduces water usage and fuel consumption through gravity-fed irrigation systems during cultivation. They recently secured funding from the Hivos-Triodos Fund.
Provides rural livestock smallholders with access to veterinary advice and other animal health products and services. Through a franchising model, Ziweto enables entrepreneurs to establish agro-veterinary shops, improving the livelihood of underserved communities in rural Malawi. They managed to secure funding from the African Development Bank and the Malawi Innovation Challenge Fund.
Produces various fish products in an integrated aquaculture approach. While the production aims at closing the natural resource cycle, Chonona integrates the local community into the supply of inputs, marketing and fish processing. They raised funds from the Malawi Growth Accelerator.
Green Ventures manufactures organic fertiliser from organic waste in rural Malawi and enables smallholder farmers to practice sustainable agriculture. The nutrient-rich, eco-friendly, safe and affordable organic fertiliser is an alternative to chemical and environmentally harmful fertilisers which acidify soils in the long-term. They raised finance from the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
SECTOR: BIODIVERSITY
Honey Products Industries creates an agribusiness value chain out of high-quality honey. The honey is sourced from independent smallholder beekeepers, packaged and processed in factory hubs and distributed across the country via a franchise model. They managed to secure funds from the Malawi Growth Accelerator and Fledge.
SECTOR: WASTE MANAGEMENT
Produces briquettes through waste recycling as a sustainable, clean source of energy. The enterprise also provides add-on equipment for briquette users, such as briquette-compatible cooking stoves. They secured funds from the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
SECTOR: CLEAN ENERGY
Focuses on social and economic impacts as they provide solar access to rural communities using a pay-as-you-go financing model. GIT is also developing a biogas plant which will generate energy from agricultural waste for use by local restaurant entrepreneurs. They secured funds from USADF and the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
